Corona family appeals for privacy

MANILA — The family of convicted Chief Justice Renato C. Corona, who remains confined at The Medical City, Wednesday appealed for privacy after the grueling five-month impeachment trial.

“Let us respect the request of the family for privacy at the moment,” Anne dela Cruz, corporate communications chief of The Medical City, told media men waiting for updates at the hospital lobby.

“Let’s give him a chance to rest,” she added, conveying the Corona family’s request.

Dela Cruz said it is the wish of the family for the 63-year-old Corona to have “complete bed rest” considering that he had been through a lot during the Senate impeachment trial.

Corona is still confined at one of the private rooms on the 15th floor of the hospital after being admitted there last May 22. Security has also been tight, with only Corona’s family, close friends, and lawyers allowed to visit him.

“Let’s just give him (Corona) a chance to rest because he’s been through a lot,” Dela Cruz said.

Dela Cruz said that the hospital would not issue any medical bulletin regarding Corona’s medical status, but assured that he’s doing well and resting in bed.

Corona’s doctors and nurses are also doing their regular rounds inside his room to check on his status.

“As far as I know, he’s doing okay (but) needs complete bed rest,” Dela Cruz said.

“Early this morning (Wednesday), one of his doctors checked on him as part of the regular rounds and saw him sleeping,” she added.

Dela Cruz said that there was still no advice yet from Corona’s doctors when he will be discharged from the hospital.

“There is still no advice yet from them (doctors) when he will be released from the hospital,” she said.

Corona is being watched tightly by his attending doctors led by Dr. Michael L. Villa, an endocrinologist; Dr. Mariann N. Almajar, a cardiologist; and a number of nurses.

Corona’s lawyers led by former Supreme Court Associate Justice Serafin Cuevas visited their client at his hospital room past 8 p.m. Tuesday to confer with him and plan their next move after the Senate, voting 20-3, found him guilty of betrayal of public trust and culpable violation of the Constitution.

Dr. Eugenio Jose F. Ramos, senior vice president of the Medical Services Group of The Medical City, had earlier said that Corona has been a diabetic for the past 20 years, on daily insulin, with complications involving both kidneys and the heart.

The Chief Justice’s kidney function, he said, is also poor and he has had two bypass surgeries – in 1995 and 2008.
